How MaterialGraph describes color.

Each record stores the material’s main colors, measured from its product images, and describes them with 24 fixed terms for family, mood and undertone. A color search finds materials with a color close to the one you ask for.

Search by paint name

One paint name finds materials from every brand.

Type a paint name, even loosely. MaterialGraph works out which color it means, then finds materials close to it: tile, textile and wood, from any brand. The example here is a real search.

A fixed list of color terms.

Family, mood and undertone each use a fixed list of terms, with the other words people use for them. A search or filter always uses the same terms, whatever a brand called the color.

Where color comes from.

Most color is measured from product images. Where the brand states a color, such as a paint’s own hex value, that is used instead, and each value records which. A measured color describes how the material looks in its photographs. It is not a color specification.

A material with one color listed is a single color. A material with no colors listed has not been measured yet.
